OBSERVER TRAINING

4-Week Training Course
Training to become a Fisheries Observer consists of an intensive 4 week course that combines classroom and wet lab instruction. The topics covered include:

  • Navigation

  • Fishing vessels & gear

  • Fish species identification

  • Catch estimation

  • Sampling & data collection techniques

  • Radio communications

  • Fisheries regulations

  • Trainees must pass a biological and surveillance exam before being designated as Fisheries Observers.

    Safety Training
JAVITECH teaches an in-house safety course and enlists the aid of outside agencies to provide additional safety training.

    After Training
Upon successful completion of training and security clearances, new recruits are placed on the Javitech roster list and begin deployments to commercial fishing vessels. Newly trained Observers are typically sent on shorter voyages of up to several days until they gain the experience needed for longer assignments of a week or more.
