observer program - FISHERIES COVERED
Fisheries Observers in eastern Canada are deployed to a wide variety of vessels, ranging from one-day trips on 40-foot vessels to over a month aboard large factory freezer trawlers. The major fisheries covered include:

  • Groundfish (Fixed & Mobile)
  • Crab & Lobster
  • Herring
  • Scallop
  • Shrimp
  • Large Pelagics (Swordfish & Tuna)

Senior Observers are deployed to vessels of all sizes for both short and long trips. Newer Observers are normally sent on smaller vessels for shorter trips. They are typically deployed to vessels of 40 to 65 feet in length for trips of 1 to 4 days at sea, however they may on occasion be sent to sea for longer trips of up to 2 weeks. Upon successful completion of the summer term those Observers that wish to remain with the program will be considered for longer deployments of a month or longer.
